THANKS SO MUCH to everyone who took the time to look over 2009 with us. I found myself more than once getting teary-eyed looking over all of these sessions. To say that we love what we do can not even begin to explain….we find it such an honor to be brought into your intimate space and lives, to capture a piece of who you are. Thank you to each and every one of you for making 2009 such a fantastic year for us!!

Since my brother is out on tour again and my boys keep asking about him, I thought I would post photos I did recently for his new solo album.

If you know me, you know I love music. And almost just as much as I love music, I love taking photos of artists at work- especially musicians.

This is not the first time our friend Greg Laswell has been featured here on the blog. You may remember our photos of his show last fall, or us mentioning that his song was on our new Senior website. We were happy that his latest tour had a stop in Columbus. We headed up there, hung out a couple hours with Greg (I talked his ear off about how much our kids love him), and then we watched the show.

Oh, and just when I think the passion of my love for my Canon Mark II may be calming down, I get to shoot something like this…no flash, no lights but a few stage lights.

A few months ago Brett went up to Columbus, Ohio to help one of our best friends in the world, Mitch, with his booth at the local bridal show. He owns a wonderful live music company called Fermata Music, that offers many types of music to cover the diverse musical palette. Mitch himself, is a one of a kind guy….from an amazing trumpet player, to an amazing singer, to an ultra amazing person- if you choose to look into Fermata for your future wedding or event, prepare for a wonderful experience!

miscellaneous monday {i mean friday}

This may very well be the most RANDOM post I have ever done, so please do your best to follow along. Let’s just say I gain my inspiration from my pal Betsy, who can pull off a random blog post like an eloquent diary entry…..

First up, did you see the Grey’s Anatomy Finale last night? To be honest I don’t watch the show (withhold stone throwing please), but I hear that one of my favorite singer’s {Greg Laswell} wrote a new single for the show, and it debuted last night! Did you hear it??

By the way, we have been asked about the music on our new Senior site (shown below), and Greg is who sings the first song.

So, go GREG! Can’t wait to hear the new stuff, and see you in Columbus in July!

Next up…I have had some inquiries about Spring sessions, and frankly WE BE BOOKED. If you are thinking you want a summer session or early Fall, let us know ASAP!! We are filling up quickly. We are full through the summer, with a few days left in August, so GET A MOVE ON!! I always have this extreme guilt when I can’t finagle people into the schedule, so please LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SCHEDULE A SESSION! Please, and thanks.

Now personal randomness! (I warned you about this post…..)

We went in April to Kings Island Amusement Park for Brett’s company picnic. We LOVE doing this and were so looking forward to it this year, but it turned out to be a cold and rainy day. BOO.

We tried to stay on the bright side (free Starbucks, Ice Cream, and various other junk helped).

The look of sheer joy was continuous on my face.

RAIN! FUN!

Here’s Brett and Priya on some lame ride….P has a weird fear of anything outside of kiddie land.

Adin on the other hand is NOT afraid. This photo made me laugh, so I decide do crop in so you could see Brett and Adin’s faces!!

Later in April we went to see Ray Lamontagne in concert. Another singer who I ADORE. His music and voice are beyond goodness. So yeah, I bought tickets for Brett’s birthday to go….wasn’t that so sweet of me? Haaaa. Anything for my Brett.

We sat pretty far back and it was completely dark except for the stage….our Canon 5D Mark II (with 85 1.8) did a fab job. Brett took these full raw size because he knew I would be cropping in, and WOW. That camera amazes me to no end.

Wonderful show….I have a new theory that he is the only person I have heard live that is actually BETTER than recorded. His raw, soulful sound is just a little lost in production. Just a little.

Another day recently my friend Renee stopped by to show us her new bike. Adin decided to go for a ride.

Gabe fell asleep in the car one day which he NEVER does, so I took a photo of all my babies together. It has been a while since I had a shot of the 4 of them.

And this week….

Kids have been sick, and Gabe is in the midst of the bad stuff as I type. I took these yesterday and he just sat perfectly still, and stared. He feels horrible.

(But he is still precious.)

I said, “Are you tired baby?” And he laid down.

So there is a little catch up on the randomness of our life. We are scheduled to have our “Mother’s Day” with my family this weekend because we had to cancel last weekend due to illness. We are hoping everyone feels better soon. *hoping*

This week is “LA week” on the studio3z blog. First up….

I constantly keep a mental list of shoots that I would like to do, and it probably changes daily. One thing that has been on the list for a while is a night shoot. I wanted a good challenge-just my camera + good lenses, no flash, and only using available light when found (because the whole shoot was new territory). That is exactly what we did for this, minus 2 photos taken inside Elijah’s house.

Meet Jason and Elijah of {vinegar + oil}. They are DJ’s, and pretty rad ones at that.

I feel like I need to apologize ahead of time for their hotness…It’s not their fault. They really can’t help it.

Whenever my brother comes to town from Virginia for a show, I make sure I go see him. Since he was going to be in town for Thanksgiving, someone he knew asked if he wanted to be added to a show at Molly Malone’s in Covington, KY. Our very good friend Matt happened to be in town that night from Columbus, and Billy and Matt have been know to do some fun improv music when we all hang out at my parents on T-day. Billy asked Matt to accompany on a couple songs with his flugle horn…it was awesome.

Billy started out with some solo stuff….if you missed the promo shots I did for his solo album, look HERE.

I promise that no husbands were intentionally flicked off in the taking of this image.

Brett and I love the voice and lyrics of the amazing Greg Laswell. If you don’t know who he is, chances are you will. He is just that amazing. We traveled to Indy along with my baby sister Ashley last night to see him live for the first time. Brett’s brother Jason who lives in LA is great friends with Greg and his guitarist Brandon, so we we were so happy to get to know friends who are meaningful to Jay.

Our absolute favorite song by Greg is “Embrace Me,” and I have mentioned it on here before, but here is a video to another fav of mine. You need to hear his voice before looking though the photos to really understand them.

The room was odd and narrow, but the people were so happy to see him.

I love this shot.

It was so narrow that it was nearly impossible to get a good full stage shot, so I put these two photos side by side.

After the set Greg went around mingling with fans, and then we all hung out for a little bit. We warned him we like to take pictures. He didn’t mind.

artistic expressions in various forms

I love being an artist and photographer. I have been taking photos for years, but it wasn’t until recently that I realized how similar photography is to painting. Photographers are painters themselves, but the medium is not oil or acrylic based, but pure light. As we move and adjust ourselves and the lens, we form the most pleasing composition in our eyes.

When I start a painting or approach a photography session, most often I have a vision in mind. Often times I may not express it aloud but as soon as I look through my lens, I do everything in my power to make my vision a reality. Most often this vision is sparked by some form of inspiration. Sometimes my vision may not be clear until I begin getting acquainted with whomever or whatever I may be taking photos of. The worst is when I have been deeply inspired by something, and struggle to relay that vision through my work. I can kinda be a baby. BUT, one of the best things in the world is being blindsided by a big ol’ dose of inspiration that I never saw coming. I love it. That’s what this session was to me.

My brother had the spontaneous idea to do a photo session for his new solo album he’s working on. He is an artist himself in MANY ways, his current outlet being-creating music. He is in the band “The Wading Girl,” home based near Roanoke, Virginia (click HERE to check them out). While he was in town we concocted this idea, and a few days later we met up to shoot. It was the evening of the 4th of July and we had a total blast! (That was a pun, yes.) I took my little ideas, we went to a part of town that neither of us had ever explored, and we ran around like we were little kids again.

This session was special to me not only because it is my baby brother and we got to spend time together, but because I found myself so excited and inspired, shooting for the sheer joy of it.

My brother is now in love with my umbrella. He is adding one to his permanent wardrobe.

My brother is a kick butt harmonica player.

I love music. Unfortunately, it is not too often I get a chance to get out and hear it live. Whenever my brother is on tour with his band, The Wading Girl and they pass through Cincinnati, I make sure that I can get out to see him. Brett was able to join me this time too. They were touring with the band “Barn Burning”, who we really enjoyed as well. Here are a few favorites from the night….
